Said
to have originated in China some 5000 years ago, reflexology
was introduced to the west by Dr William Fitzgerald, an
American ear, nose and throat specialist around 1913.
The
entire body is mapped on the feet and hands. By applying
gentle pressure on the reflex points, specific areas are
stimulated to promote healing and relaxation. Painful areas
of the body can be addressed on the related reflexes on
the feet and hands!
It
is thought that illness occurs when 'energy channels' in
the body are blocked. Massage is aimed at destroying these
blocks, allowing energy to flow freely again and 'heal'
the damage.
In
Great Britain, reflexology is part of the National Health
Service. In Switzerland, nurses use reflexology with terminally
ill cancer patients to reduce pain.
